Dental_cavity_removal

Dental hygiene treatment cleans your teeth and gums thoroughly by removing any built-up plaque and calculus which has not been removed via brushing or flossing. Regular hygiene treatments help maintain good oral health and prevent gum disease and tooth loss.

Before appointment:

Your dentist will check how frequently you need hygiene treatment. Generally, if you do not have an active gum disease then hygiene treatment is recommended twice a year. If you have an active gum disease, then usually 4 hygiene treatments a year are recommended.

During appointment:

Your hygienist will explain the procedure to you and remove plaque and calculus, either with hand instruments or using an ultrasonic (machine) instrument. A suction is used to make sure no water collects at back of your mouth. If any areas are uncomfortable, please mention to the Hygienist and a local anaesthetic can be used if necessary. At the end of your hygiene appointment, your teeth are polished with a special paste.

A tailored advice will be given to take care of your teeth and gums. If needed, your Hygienist can refer you to a gum specialist (periodontist).

After treatment:

Your gums can feel little sore after treatment and you can expect some bleeding and sensitivity to hot and cold food for few days.

FAQ

If your gums are healthy and disease-free, then we recommend visiting the dental hygienist every six months. That way, they can manage your oral health and remove any plaque or tartar buildup. However, if you experience any underlying problems with your gums or more worryingly, heavy plaque build-up or gum disease, then you need to visit the hygienist more frequently.

Although your regular dental cleaning should not cause any pain, you may sometimes experience slight discomfort during portions of the cleaning process. This is usually because your gums are inflamed from improper tooth brushing and flossing. If you do experience pain, please tell your hygienist; a numbing gel or injection can be used to alleviate any pain or discomfort.

A hygienist appointment takes 30 minutes. Your hygienist can tailor your appointment according to your oral health needs.

Yes, you can eat and drink immediately after your cleaning.
